ARTHA MATSYENDRASANA


TECHNIQUE:
  1. Sit down and stretch your legs straight touching each other.
  2. Bend the left leg and keep the ankle in between the genitals and anus such that it touches the nerve present there.
  3. Now, gently take the right leg and place it near the left knee.
  4. Gently place the right leg in the left hand armpit.  After this step, slightly flex the hip.  By using the left hand, try to touch the right leg fingers.  Your vision should be on the right shoulder in this position.
  5. Bring your right hand backwards and place it on the left thigh.  During this time, the chest should be straight.  This is the “complete” position.
  6. Alternatively, change the legs (i.e.) bend the right leg and make the left leg crossover and perform this asana.

GENERAL:
  There is a similarity between this asana and matseyendrasana, but this asana is slightly difficult.  Everyone cannot do it.

ADVANCED STAGE:
  There is an advanced stage in this asana.  Instead of placing the left leg on the ground, you should place it on the edge of the right thigh.  And as usual, all other steps should be adopted.  Only a selected few can do this advanced stage and that too with the help of an experienced yoga instructor.

DURATION:  Up to two minutes.

BENEFITS:
  • All the asanas, which I had mentioned previously, were explaining about bending the body back and forth.  But this particular asana flexes the backbone and also the side muscles attached to it.  In this way, it refreshes and relaxes the whole body.  It also strengthens the whole set of muscles attached to the backbone.
  • The internal organs in the stomach gets pulled towards the side and by this action, waste materials are eliminated out of the body.
  • Prevents gastrointestinal-related disorders.
  • Since both back and side muscles are stretched, the whole nervous system gets refreshed.
  • Strengthens the liver.
  • Prevents constipation.

PRECAUTION:  When this asana is done impulsively and rashly, side effects such as hip pain, neck stiffness, and nervous problem can occur.  Learn slowly and safely.
